Founded in 2012, the South African Small and Medium Enterprises Federation (SASMEF) is a national private social enterprise that unlocks resources from the political and economic centers as a catalyst for the creation and development of sustainable SME’s. LEADERSHIP BOARD OF DIRECTORS REVD DR THABO MAKGOBA, ARCHBISHOP OF CAPE TOWN PATRON Dr Makgoba holds a BSc, a BA(Honours) in Applied Psychology, and a MEd in Educational Psychology, all from the University of the Witwatersrand. Central to his life has been his ordained ministry. He has served as the Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town, and Metropolitan (that is, head) of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa, since January 2008. He is the youngest person elected to this office. He succeeded Archbishop Njongonkulu Ndungane, who served from 1997 to 2007 and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who served from 1986 to 1996. In 2008 he was decorated by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams with the Cross of St Augustine for his role within the Anglican Communion. He is currently the chair of the Anglican Communion Environmental Network. In 2009 he received the degree of Doctor of Divinity, honoris causa, from the General Theological Seminary (of the Episcopal Church) in New York City. He described this as an award for all South Africans who were denied access to education. Later in 2009 he earned a PhD from the University of Cape Town, for a thesis on Spirituality in the South African Mining Workplace. He received the Ernest Oppenheimer Memorial Trust Scholarship to support this research. Over the last 3 years he has taught MBA students at the University of Cape Town on Ethical Leadership and Stewardship. In 2011 July till April 2012 he was a commissioner for the Press Freedom Commission. In February 2012 he was inaugurated as the Chancellor of the University of the Western Cape. He has been a panelist and discussion leader at various World Economic Forum meetings and topics on which he has made contributions have included: Fostering Political Stability; The Future of Democracy in Africa; Major Ideological Shifts of the 21st Century; Restoring Faith in Economics; The Sustainability of Communities; From Contract to Covenant; Rethinking Values in the Post-Crisis World He has established, and serves on the boards of, various NGOs. His other interests include reading theology, walking, and writing in leadership development. He published a short memoir, Connectedness, in 2005 (ISBN 0-958470-6-x). He writes frequently for a range of newspapers and journals. PROF. DANIEL PLAATJIES CHAIRMAN Professor Daniel Plaatjies is a Commissioner on the Financial and Fiscal Commission, a Constitutional entity. Professor Plaatjies has a BSocSc (Hons) from the University of Cape Town in Policy, Planning, Administration and Management, a MPhil in Policy, Planning and Management from the University of Western Cape and a PhD in the study of Governance, Public Finance, Public Policy from the University of the Witwatersrand. He also holds a range of professional certificates from higher education institutions outside South Africa.Prof Plaatjies is the former Head and Director of the WITS School of Governance (previously known as Graduate School of Public and Development Management) and is currently a Visiting Professor at the University of Free State’s School of Business Administration. He has served in various fulltime employed positions of middle to senior to executive management positions up to director general including special adviser within three ministries in the South Africa national and provincial government’s public service.He is the author and editor of Future Inheritance – Building State Capacity in Democratic South Africa (Jacana, 2011) and Protecting the Inheritance – Governance and Public Accountability in Democratic South Africa (Jacana, 2013) and leader editor of HSRC’s 2016 State of Nation – South African 2016: Who is in Charge? publication. He has also authored several government publications and articles contributing to the public intellectual discourse on government, governance, public finance, public policies and public leadership, administration and management. DR. RUBEN RICHARDS PAST CHAIRMAN Dr. Ruben Richards (Ph.D), author and public speaker, is a widely travelled and multi-skilled South African with a wealth of experience and expertise in both the public and private sector. He has held executive levels positions across a wide range of sectors including business, government, academia, industry and civil society – the quintessential African Renaissance professional. Ruben has also established the Ruben Richards Foundation – a South African non-profit philanthropic organisation with a vision to facilitate healing and peace building in traumatised communities. LYDIA ZINGONI DEPUTY CHAIRMAN Lydia Zingoni is Founder and Director of SA Teen Entrepreneur Foundation. She holds several degrees in Economic History, Information management, and marketing. She has worked for several years as an Information Specialist in the United Kingdom, Zimbabwe and South Africa. Her last corporate job as CPUT Libraries Director, exposed her to the business formation needs of potential young entrepreneurs. Lydia, has run several businesses of her own in book trade, business information directories, free advertising papers, to internet cafes. Her passion has been and still is to instil the young minds to a culture of entrepreneurship.SA Teen Entrepreneur Foundation was formed purely as a channel for the cultivation and promotion of an entrepreneurial culture in all our teens in South Africa and beyond. To date there are 18,5 million teens in South Africa out of a total population of 49 million people. Therefore teenagers represent more than a third of the nation’s population. RICHARD LEHNERDT DEPUTY CHAIRMAN Richard has diverse cross functional experience with over 20 years in Sales/Business Development, Marketing and Entrepreneurship across various service related industries. As a professional consultant with a broad field of consulting and management experience he has handled a variety of functions performed over the years ranging from the creation of new market opportunities, expanding existing operations and introducing new products through to strategy execution and team management and motivation. He is the Managing Member of CorporateWise, a skills training company which offers a range of training for a number of key business skills, including HR training and Executive Director of Bizspace South Africa which provides solutions for manufacturing, distribution, services, retail and hospitality, job shops and small manufacturers that require the scalability and flexibility to meet today’s business challenges. Richard is highly effective at solving complex business problems through the focused application of technology in a structured, organized and measured approach. DAVE ROMERO TREASURER Dave Romero qualified as a Professional Accountant (SA) in 1987. He Joined a Corporate Finance Company after qualifying where he got his first taste of Venture Capital. After a variety of interesting positions, he resigned as Executive Chairman from REF Finance and Investment Corporation Ltd, and went on to pursue a career in consulting and business mentoring. In 2012, Dave decided that he wanted to enter the Private Equity arena again so he founded Caban Investments Limited of which he is the Group CEO, as well as founding four holding companies. MIKE HINDLE DIRECTOR Mike has been involved in 1000’s of business transactions and valuations over the past 35 years covering virtually every type of industry. During this period he built a Business Brokers company into the largest brokerage in Southern Hemisphere making him one of the most experienced business brokers in the country. He sold his shareholding in the company in 2010 and the firm is still the best in the industry.Since 2011 he has been involved in management consulting and assisting potential entrepreneurs in training on “How to Run Your Own Business”, as well as helping to establish new business ventures.His passion has always been in business environment, business valuations, selling of businesses and franchises, mergers and acquisitions, and general education and advice for buyers and sellers of business and business brokers.Mike is a Director of the Institute Of Estate Agents KZN and Chairman of the South African Business Broking Association DYLAN JAMES DIRECTOR / BOARD SECRETARY Dylan is a Creative Partner at The Spaza Agency. The Spaza Agency, comprised of a small team of dynamic individuals with over 40 years of combined experience in advertising, public relations, content creation, design and events management is focused on developing innovative, experiential marketing campaigns and leveraging on unpaid media to help small businesses and start-ups in Cape Town and South Africa achieve market presence, improve their visibility and share-of-voice in the local and global media landscape.Previously Dylan worked for Cape Media Corporation producing and conceptualising market leading business to business events with a special focus on skills and training as well as leadership development. Other sectors include the medical, tourism and energy industries. Dylan thereafter moved to the private equity arena where over four years he fulfilled the role of COO and CMO. He is also an advisor to the South African Informal Traders Alliance, a national grouping of informal trader organisations that are working towards creating a safe and sustainable environment for this vital parallel economy. A keen business developer, Dylan has worked with companies of all sizes from JSE listed companies, start-ups through to township cooperatives and established small businesses. LUTHER DIEDERICKS DIRECTOR During a career of more than 35 years in National and Local Government, Luther has established himself in the disciplines of Human Resources, Organisational Development and Performance Management. He established an internal consultancy service within Shared Services in the city of Cape Town, which he managed till he resigned in September 2005 to start Cicama, his own organizational development business and establish SA Business Hub with Ben Botes.Being part of SASMEF he welcomes the opportunity to be a part of a team to create synergy for the benefit of economic development in South Africa. MADELEIN MKUNU DIRECTOR She is the Founder & President of Leading Women of Africa (LWA) and currently the Director of LWA-Corporate Investment, a firm that aims to increase the number of women involved in investment, international trade and other services on the continent. She also sits on the board of South African Small and Medium enterprise Federation (SASMEF). In the recent years, she has gained experience in Business Development, Strategic planning, Policy recommendations, programme design and implementation, Leadership Training and Women’s empowerment strategies. Madelein’s passion is see women contribute in the rebuilding of the continent through access in the mainstream economy. She was mentored by one of the founders of Africa, Dr David Kenneth Kaunda, First President of Zambia. DEON CUPIDO DIRECTOR Deon, an established entrepreneur, holds a B.Comm in Accounting from the University of the Western Cape, an MBA from the University of Stellenbosch and is an Associate General Accountant of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants. He is the owner of Anthill Finance, which provides invoice factoring services to blue chip companies, Total Somerset Mall, a service station in Somerset West and is the majority shareholder of Nyati South Africa (formerly Moe and Co) a Barloworld enterprise development initiative.His previous employment includes Transport Contracts Manager, managing all secondary and primary fuel distribution contracts for Shell in Southern Africa. During his tenure at Shell, was instrumental in merging all the Shell owner drivers into one company Mzanzi Africa Logistics. Held various positions with Transnet, which includes Regional Operations Manager for Freightdynamics and Terminal Manager at Portnet. He also held the position of accountant at Sasol.Deon is Western Cape Chairman of the Total Dealers Shops Forum, the Western and Eastern Cape Chairman of the Fuel Retailers Association, Director of the South African Small and Medium Enterprises Federation and the Total Western Cape Representative on the Forecourt Safety Forum. He is passionate about serving the community and received the “Most Dedicated Volunteer” award from NICRO for his work in Mitchells Plain. He is alsa musician and the past Vice Chairman of the Hottentots Holland Brass Band EXECUTIVE TEAM CARL LOTTER CEO Carl is a senior associate at the Africa Strategy Group. Carl specializes in international trade and investments, corporate governance and government relations; providing strategic advisory to both business and governments.A former diplomat – Carl served as South Africa’s trade & development representative to Australia and the USA – he has extensive international experience in the financial services, energy and water utilities, minerals and other strategic economic development sectors.In recognition of his leadership in developmental economics, Carl was awarded the Hubert Humphrey Fellowship by the USA government; enabling studies at the Boston University School of Management, focusing on finance and investments in developing countries.Carl is the recipient of the Harvard South African Fellowship and attended Harvard University as a Senior Fellow attached to Elliott House. He also attended Harvard Business School’s Senior Executives Development program. On completion of the program, he undertook an internship at Barclays Bank International Division in New York, USA. Carl is passionate on issues related to economic development – focusing on developing processes and practices, to promote corporate governance and international best practices in business and government.Carl has been nominated as a candidate to the National Small Business Advisory Council.
